Lana's thoughts on the Antiracism Course facilitated by Selam Debs

"Selam Debs has created an Antiracism course that ignites action oriented lights along the great road ahead of us.
We are called to unpack, unlearn and dismantle colonial ideologies that have been consumed since birth and have been harming us all.
This work is not about feeling good or fitting in but rather calls on all of us to do better. To identify the impact of our actions, have awareness in our apology and move forward in committed action.
This course assists one in recognizing when white ideology and supremacy is prioritized and centred to preserve privilege and comfort.
It also helps us to recognize that racism is not just a label reserved for other groups that are overt in their violence but rather an insidious and embodied force that has to be addressed in the excavation of our thoughts, work places, how we carry ourselves, our language, hiring policies, media, and the “jokes” we participate in.
It is holding up a mirror and magnifying glass to every system of power in place be it education, medicine, health, wellness, recreation, business, the justice system, child welfare etc. to critically examine how these systems benefit some and oppress many.
Whether you like it or not, racism shows up in all spheres of our lives. When we are mindless, dismissive or ignorant of it, it is maintained, strengthened and again, harms us all.
Yes, the work of Antiracism is a lifelong and evolving process. Yes, the road is not always an easy one to navigate. Yes, you and I will mess up.
Selam Debs is an incredible leader who has so graciously shown me where the mop and pail is, urging me to get to work. In the words of Janelle Monàe “You fuck up the kitchen then you should do the dishes.”
If you are someone who wants to commit themselves to growth, connection, justice, reconciliation and humanity, this body of work is for you."
